CSU-Pueblo sweeps day two at Dixie State Classic

ST. GEORGE, UTAH (February 10, 2017) – Colorado State University-Pueblo softball picked up its first victories of the season Friday sweeping a pair of games on day two of the Dixie State Easton Classic. The Pack beat Western New Mexico 4-3 in extra innings in game one and survived 7-6 over University of Concordia-Portland in the nightcap.

Effective pitching and timely hitting paved the way for the Pack.

Lexie Martindale (Sr., Pueblo, Colo.) earned both wins in the circle for the Pack, allowing nine runs in 13.0 innings pitched and improve to 2-1 on the year.

Michaela Burpee (So., Union City, Calif.) gathered four hits on the day including hitting her second homerun of the year and one double. Christa Angers (Fr., Villa Park, Calif.) hit her second bomb of the season in going 3-for-6 at the plate with three runs scored.

Alyssa Ubrun (Jr., Olympia, Wash.) hit homerun number one of the season and collected four RBIs on the day.

In game one against former RMAC-for Western New Mexico, the ThunderWolves battled the Mustangs allowing one run over three innings before the Burpee-Angers duo blasted homeruns giving CSU-Pueblo its first lead 3-1 through three innings.

WNMU evened the score in their next at bat on two hits in the fifth.

Pack hurler K'Lee Kent (Jr., Hobbs, NM) tossed six innings and allowed three runs on six hits and three strikeouts.

The game went to extra innings with the score unchanged at 3-3.

In the top of the eighth, the Mustangs stranded a runner at third base, setting up the Pack in the bottom half.

With one out and a runner placed on second base to start the inning, Burpee hit a single through the left side, scoring Moriah Turney (Sr., Brighton, Colo.).

In the nightcap versus University of Concordia-Portland, the ThunderWolves scored in the first on a Martindale RBI-double, scoring Valeria Mendoza (Fr., Fountain, Colo.) who reached via an error.

The Pack added two more runs on two hits and another Cavaliers error for an early 3-0 lead.

Concordia got on the board in the third, scoring two runs on three hits.

CSU-Pueblo added a run in their half of the inning on back-to-back doubles by Burpee and Turney.

The game remained 4-2 until the bottom of the sixth when Ubrun connected a 3-run shot to left centerfield, extending the Pack's lead 7-2 going to the final frame.

The Cavaliers went down fighting as they put up four runs to get within one run before Martindale closed the door with the bases loaded.

 CSU-Pueblo (2-2) closes out the Dixie State Classic Saturday with a single game versus University of Concordia-Irvine. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. at the Canyons Softball Complex.
