PUEBLO, Colo. (September 17, 2018) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's tennis team went 0-2 in two close matches at Pueblo City Park Thursday and Sunday. The ThunderWolves lost 5-2 against University of Texas-Permian Basin and fell to Newman University by a 4-2 result.
Daniel Garcia (Jr., Riverside, Calif.) and Edward Cooper (Fr., Bolton, UK) each gathered three wins, as the pair went 2-0 at No. 2 doubles. Garcia picked up a singles victory at the No. 4 spot and Cooper was victorious at No. 5. Cade Boedeker (So., Fort Worth, Texas) added two wins, one at No. 3 doubles and another at No. 6 singles.
Against UTPB, the Pack battled for the doubles point with a win at No. 2 with Garcia and Cooper gaining the 8-4 decision. Both the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles went to a tiebreak, which the Falcons were able to secure and take the 1-0 lead into singles. Garcia ( and Cooper were both winners in straight sets, while James Ryan (Sr., Rustington/Sussex, UK) went to a third set tiebreaker, but lost 10-5. No. 1 singles player Ogulcan Deniz (Sr., Istanbul, Turkey) had to retire due to injury.
In the loss to Newman, the ThunderWolves won all three doubles matches to take the team point. At No. 1, Deniz and Thomas Pudney (So., Southend-on-the-Sea, UK) won 8-5, while Garcia/Cooper picked up an 8-2 win and the No. 3 team of Boedeker and Richard Garcia (Fr., Surrey, UK) were winners by the score of 8-4.
Boedeker was the lone winner at No. 6 singles by the score of 6-2, 6-4. Deniz was winning the third set tiebreak 3-0, but the match was not finished.
Next up for the Pack is the ITA South Central Regional Sept. 21-23 in Wichita Falls, Texas and hosted by Midwestern State.
