PUEBLO, Colo. (September 16, 2018) - Colorado State University-Pueblo men's soccer dropped its first game on home turf, falling 6-2 against No. 19 Colorado Mesa University Sunday at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.
Colorado Mesa's Lawan Abary scored four goals for the Mavericks.
With temperatures above normal on the pitch, the ThunderWolves started the match on their heels when Colorado Mesa's potent offense fired and converted its first shot with 2:07 expired on the game clock and for an early 1-0 lead.
CSU-Pueblo got its first shot at the net in the 23' on a Marvin Zajonz (Jr., Reutlingen, Germany).
Mesa added a goal on a shot from 30 yards out and the ball hit inside the left post.
At halftime CSU-Pueblo had five shots by five different players. Mesa held a 2-1 corner kick advantage.
Starting period two the Mavericks scored three goals in a two minutes span after suffocating defense caused the Pack to turn the ball over at midfield.
The ThunderWolves broke the shutout on the Jones goal in the 63' off a deflection and rebounded shot.
Baeumle netted his goal in the 70' hit from 35 yards out on a free kick.
In the 78th minute Mavericks scored the last goal.
At goalkeeper, the Pack's Joseph Banul (Fr., Richardson, Tex.) allowed five goals and made two saves in sixty minutes at the net. Garret Wild (Fr., Brownsville, Tex.) came on midway through the second period.
CSU-Pueblo (3-2-1, 0-1-1 RMAC) stays home next week to continue RMAC play against Colorado Mines and South Dakota Mines.
