Foerster ‘s game winner leads Pack over St. Mary’s 14-13

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. (March 22, 2017) Blake Foerster scored five goals including a game winner with 1:54 remaining to lead Colorado State University-Pueblo Men's Lacrosse to a 14-13 win over the University of St. Mary's  (Kan.) 14-13 Tuesday night.

The win evens the Pack's record at 2-2 with a 0-2 mark in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games. Ranked No. 9 in the NAIA, the Spires dropped to 2-4.

Foerster (Jr., Centennial, Colo.)  fired in five goals for the Pack. He also dished out three assists for a total of eight points.  Six of Foerster's eight points came in the second half as he led the Pack to the win. Foerster leads the Pack with 15 goals and seven assists.

The Attackman leads the RMAC with 3.75 goals per game and 5.5 points per game.  He stands tied for sixth nationally in goals per game and fourth in points per game.

Taylor Davis (So., Littleton, Colo.) and Nick Matzek (Jr., Tustin, Calif.) both finished with four points. Davis delivered three goals and an assist. Matzek netted two goals and handed out two assists.

Coming off a performance that earned him RMAC Defensive Player of the Week honors, Devin Thrower (R-Fr., Las Vegas, Nev.) added five more ground balls. Thrower also scored a goal and added an assist.

Cody Bolen (Jr., Castle Rock, Colo.) got the Pack on the board just 2:18 into the game. Parker Loyd (Fr., Centennial, Colo.) assisted on Bolen's seventh goal of the season.

St. Mary's would answer less than a minute later to tie the game at one. The two teams would trade goals the rest of the quarter with the Pack emerging with a 5-4 lead. Matzek, Foerster, Davis and Caleb Johnson (Jr., Castle Rock, Colo.) all scored in the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, the Spires took the lead with back-to-back goals. Matzek tied it up 18 seconds later with his second of the game. Two more Spire goals put St. Mary's up 8-6. Davis put home a feed from Matzek with 52 seconds left in the second quarter to make it 8-7 at halftime.

Foerster took over in the second half, scoring twice in the quarter and assisting on a Davis goal. With the Pack down 10-8, Foerster rocketed in a pair of goals on assists from Davis and Weston Bartgis (So., El Cajon, Calif.) to tie the game at 10 heading into the fourth quarter.

Less than five minutes into the fourth quarter, Foerster scored again to put the Pack up 11-10. Cole Pauley (So., Omaha, Neb.) assisted on Foerster's third consecutive goal.

The Spires would retake the lead with two consecutive goals to go in front 12-11. The Pack bounced back with a goal from Hunter Thompson (So., Greenwood Village, Colo.) and Thrower to take a 13-12 edge. With exactly five minutes left on the clock, the Spires tied the game up at 13.

As the clock ticked down to 1:54 remaining in regulation, Foerster came through again. The junior rifled in his fifth and most important goal of the game. Foerster's goal would go to be the game winner as the Pack pulled out a 14-13 win.

Nick Richards (Jr., Henderson, Nev.) earned the win with nine saves on 22 shots. Richards improved his record to 1-2 on the season. Zander Smith took the loss for the Spires, stopping eight of the 22 shots he faced.

The Pack will look to earn its first RMAC win Friday when they face conference newcomer Maryville University in St. Louis, Mo. CSU-Pueblo's first meeting with Bulldogs starts at 12 p.m. Mountain Standard Time. The Saints are 0-7 in their inaugural season.
