Men’s Golf seeks 3rd consecutive Farmers Insurance Samuel Proal Invitational Championship

PUEBLO, Colo. (September 2, 2018) – Colorado State University- Pueblo Men's Golf will begin their 2018-19 season Monday Sept. 3 and Tuesday Sept. 4 at the Farmers Insurance Samuel Proal Invitational at Walking Stick Golf Course.

The ThunderWolves will tee off at 8:30 a.m. for two rounds Monday. They will play their final 18 holes of the tournament Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.

The Pack will try to defend their home course for the third consecutive season. They have won the Farmers Insurance Samuel Proal Invitational each of the last two seasons.

Fraser Hughes (Sr., Newton Steward, Scotland, UK) and Nathan McCann (So., Lurgan Armagh, Ireland) shared first place at last year's Farmers Insurance Samuel Proal invitational. Hughes was named First Team All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference last season. He recorded a stroke average of 73.0 in his first season with the Pack to rank No. 37 in NCAA Division II.

McCann ranked second on the Pack last season with a 72.8 stroke average. He is undefeated in tournaments held in Pueblo, winning both the Farmers Insurance Samuel Proal Invitational and the Southern Colorado Masters last season.

Roy Carlsen (Arvada, Colo.) will look for a strong senior season. Carlsen finished his junior year with a career-best 74.3 stroke average. Taylor Rodriguez (Pueblo, Colo.) and Austin Shanks (Wichita, Kan.) both hope to deliver in the last tournament at Walking Stick Golf Course. The four seniors will join McCann as the Pack's starting five.

Juniors Austin Burgess (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Chase Federico (Pueblo, Colo.) will compete as individuals as they try to work their way into the rotation. Federico averaged 75.5 strokes per round, while Burgess averaged 76.4 strokes per round.

Sophomore Sam Barthram (Weybridge, Surrey, England, UK) put together a 75.1 stroke average. Barthram finished 21st at the RMAC Championships last year.

Freshman Sanjay Nithiyalingam (Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, England, UK) will compete in his first tournament for the Pack as an individual.  Nithiyalingam was a member of the Lincolnshire County U18, U16 & U14 Squad as well as the England U16 Regional Squad. He had a Top 3 finish at the 2017 25th Junior European Open and was the winner of the Men's Burghley Park Club Championship in 2017, beating the rest of the field by 11 shots. 

The Field:

Colorado Mesa University, Dodge City Community College, Fort Lewis College, Lubbock Christian University, New Mexico Junior College, New Mexico Military Institute, South Dakota School of Mines & Technology will all make the trip to Pueblo.

Course & Tournament info:

The course at Walking Stick spans 7,200 yards and par stands at 72. Walking Stick Golf Course holds a rating of 72.0 and it has a slope rating of 134 on blue grass.  Designed by Arthur Hills, ASGCA, the Walking Stick golf course opened in 1991.
