AMARILLO, Texas (May 9, 2018) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's golf team concluded the 2018 NCAA Division II West/South Central Region Championships Wednesday, as the ThunderWolves finished 19th. Junior Roy Carlsen (Arvada, Colo.) was the team's top player and finished tied for 37th.
The Pack shot a 17-over 301 on the final day to finish the Championships at La Paloma Golf Club 57-over (314-294-301--909). The ThunderWolves played the Par 5's 22-under to rank fourth in the field. The appearance at the NCAA Division II regional was the second straight and 19th in program history.
Carlsen played the final round to a score of 73 (+2) to close the tournament nine-over (79-70-73--222). He started the day with two birdies, but couldn't keep the streak alive and finished the final 16 holes with 12 pars and four bogeys. Carlsen played the Par 5's -4 for the tournament to rank second among the Pack, while his 30 pars were a team best.
Freshman Nathan McCann (Lurgan, Armagh, Ireland) had a wacky front nine with an eagle, two birdies, two pars, two bogeys and two double bogeys, which shook out to a two-over 38. He played the back nine even (two birdies, two bogeys) to finish with a 73. He finished his first regional championship tied for 53rd at 11-over (76-75-73--224). His eagle today came on the 551-yard Par 5 sixth. The freshman led the team in Par 5 scoring at -5 and led the squad with 12 birdies.
Freshman Sam Barthram (Weybridge, Surrey, UK) carded a 79 on the final day to finish the Championships 17-over (79-72-79--230) and tied for 83rd. He had two birdies on the day, both on Par 5's where he was two-under on the round. He totaled 29 pars for the tournament to rank second on the team.
Senior Neil Tillman (Arvada, Colo.) capped his career with a five-over 76, which included four birdies. He was 21-over for the Championships (80-78-76--234). His eight birdies for the tournament was the second best on the team.
Junior Fraser Hughes (Newton Stewart, Scotland) shot 82 on the final day to close the tournament 29-over (83-77-82--242). He had three birdies on the day, which matched what he had in the first two rounds combined.
The Championships close the 2017-18 season for the ThunderWolves. The Pack were ranked No. 8 in the South Central Region and No. 59 nationally in the Golfstat team rankings entering the tournament. The ThunderWolves won three tournaments this year, which included the Southern Colorado Masters at Pueblo Country Club April 9-10. CSU-Pueblo was third (-6) at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships. Both Hughes (First Team) and Tillman (Second Team) were named All-RMAC.
