NCAA BOUND! Men's golf selected to second straight regional championships

NCAA ANNOUNCEMENT

INDIANAPOLIS (April 27, 2018) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's golf team has been selected to their second consecutive NCAA West/South Central Region Championship, which is set for May 7-9 at the La Paloma Country Club in Amarillo, Texas. The appearance marks the 19th time since 1993-94 the ThunderWolves have advanced to an NCAA regional.

The Pack were ranked No. 8 in the South Central Region, as the top 10 teams advanced. There are 20 teams that make up the super region tournament. The regional is hosted by West Texas A&M University.

At a minimum, the top three teams and the top two student-athletes not with a team from each regional (regardless of region) will advance to the finals May 21-25, at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at the Shoals, Fighting Joe Course in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The remaining eight team berths will be allocated based on the regions represented in the prior year's medal-match portion of the championships, with the maximum number of teams from a given region capped at seven. The finals will be hosted by University of North Alabama.

CSU-Pueblo will be returning the the La Paloma Country Club, as they started the spring season March 12-13 at NCAA West/South Central Regional Preview. The Pack struggled as a team and finished 18th of 23 squads. The ThunderWolves had the eighth best score in the final round of the tournament, guided by a 69 from junior Roy Carlsen (Arvada, Colo.). He led the team and finished T-25th at five-over.

The Pack are coming off a third-place finish (-6) at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships. The team will enter the regional ranked No. 59 in the Golfstat team rankings. The ThunderWolves won three tournaments this year, which included the Southern Colorado Masters at Pueblo Country Club April 9-10.

Senior Neil Tillman (Arvada, Colo.) shot a career-low 65 in the final round of the RMAC Championships to finish four-under for the tournament, which was good for medalist honors at T-5th. Tillman finished the season with a 72.04 stoke average to lead the team and rank No. 32 in NCAA Divsiion II. He has a Golfstat player ranking of No. 132. In 27 rounds, Tillman totaled 92 birdies to tie for the team lead with freshman Nathan McCann (Lurgan, Armagh, Ireland). 

Junior Fraser Hughes (Newton Stewart, Scotland) recorded a stroke average of 72.15 in his first season with the Pack to rank No. 37 in NCAA Division II. He owns a Golfstat player ranking of No. 110 in the division. McCann closed the regular portion of his first collegiate season with a 72.56 stroke average that ranks No. 61 in D-II. He carded the low round of the season for the Pack when he shot a 64 in round two of the RMAC Championships. He finished the tournament three-under and T-7th. 

Hughes, Carlsen and freshman Sam Barthram (Weybridge, Surrey, UK) all finsihed the conference championships six-over to tie for 21st.
