PUEBLO, Colo. (April 10, 2018) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's golf team shot 10-under Tuesday in the final round of the Southern Colorado Masters at Pueblo Country Club to claim the team's third tournament title of the season. Freshman Nathan McCann (Lurgan, Armagh, Ireland) shot a 66 today to win the individual championship by four strokes.
The Pack finished the tournament 13-under after going 283-282-274--839 to win by eight strokes. CSU-Pueblo and No. 30 Colorado School of Mines were tied after day one at -3, but the ThunderWolves came together today with all five players shooting under 72. The Pack's top five totaled 18 birdies and three eagles in the final round. For the tournament, the Pack totaled 58 birdies, 10 more than the next team in the field of seven teams. The ThunderWolves' Par 3 game was strong all tournament, as they finished +2 as a squad, which was 10 strokes better than second place.
The ThunderWolves also won their fall home tournament in September, the Farmer's Insurance Samuel Proal Invitational, and the RMAC Fall Preview in October. McCann tied for the top honors at the home tournament with teammate Fraser Hughes (Jr., Newton Stewart, Scotland).
McCann shot a pair of 69's in the 36 holes Monday to sit -4 and tied for second. His 66 Tuesday (204 for the tournament) was the second best score of the tournament that hosted a field of 48 players. Seven of his tournament-leading 18 birdies came today, while he also added an eagle on the 555-yard Par 5, 11th. The freshman was six-under on Par 5's, which tied for the second best in the field, while his -1 on the Par 3's was tied for first. He was -2 on Par 4's.
Hughes closed the tournament two-under and tied for fifth after recording scores of 72-69-70--211. He gathered 12 birdies and finished -4 on the Par 5's.
Senior Neil Tillman (Arvada, Colo.) continued his consistent play with a 71-70-72--213, which was good for even-par at PCC and tied for 10th. He also was four-under on the Par 5's, which included an eagle on the 595-yard 7th today.
Freshman Sam Barthram (Weybridge, Surrey, UK) carded a two-under 69 in the final round and finished one-over for the tournament (71-74-69--214). He tied for 12th thanks to 35 pars, which tied for the second most on the team and playing the Par 5's four-under and the Par 3's even. Barthram eagled the 267-yard Par 4 10th after he holed a green-side bucker shot.
Rounding out play for the players scoring for the team was junior Roy Carlsen (Arvada, Colo.), who shot a 69 Tuesday. He finished the tournament T-17th after going 73-75-69--217 (+4).
Chase Federico (Pueblo, Colo.) was the Pack's top individual, as he closed the Southern Colorado Masters one-over with a 70-72-72--214. The sophomore tied for the best play on Par 3's in the field at -1.
Junior Austin Shanks (Wichita, Kan.) was 26th after closing the tournament seven-over. He led the nine total ThunderWolves with 36 pars. Junior Taylor Rodriguez (Pueblo, Colo.) was +11 and finished T-32nd. He totaled 35 pars, which was tied for the second most on the team.
The Pack hope to carry the home win momentum into the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships, set for April 22-24 at the Ocotillo Golf Course in Chandler Arizona. The tournament setup is 18 holes each day with the team and individual champion being crowned based on stroke play.
