INDIANAPOLIS (April 28, 2017) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's golf team has earned a spot at the NCAA South Central/West Region Championship, set for May 8-10 at Brookside Country Club in Stockton, California. The appearance marks the 18th time the ThunderWolves have advanced to an NCAA regional.
The ThunderWolves were ranked No. 9 in the South Central Region, as the top 10 teams advance. There are 20 teams that make up the super region tournament. The regional is hosted by the University of the Pacific and Visit Stockton.
At a minimum, the top three teams and the top two student-athletes not with a team from each regional (regardless of region) will advance to the finals May 22-26, at Reunion Resort in Kissimmee, Florida. The remaining eight team berths will be allocated based on the regions represented in the prior year's medal-match portion of the championships, with the maximum number of teams from a given region capped at seven. The finals will be hosted by the Sunshine State Conference and Central Florida Sports Commission.
The Pack will be returning the the Brookside Country Club, as they played the Visit Stockton Cactus Thaw Feb. 13-14. The ThunderWolves finished 14th of 22 teams in the super region preview.
CSU-Pueblo last advanced to the NCAA region championship in 2013-14 and will be making their 18th appearance since 1993-94.
In 11 tournaments this season the Pack finished in the top 10 on 10 occasions with six top 5's and two tournament victories. CSU-Pueblo started the year with a home tournament win at the Farmers Insurance Sam Proal Invitational at Walking Stick Golf Course Sept. 5-6. Senior Jake Ice (Tucson, Ariz.) and junior Neil Tillman (Arvada, Colo.) were co-champions of the event. The ThunderWolves also won the Bob Writz Invitational March 18-19. The Pack were fourth at the RMAC Championships this week.
Ice finished the season with the top scoring average at 73.39, which ranked seventh in the region. He totaled three top five finishes this season, which included medalist honors at the RMAC Championships where he tied for fourth.
Tillman posted a 73.77 scoring average during the season with three top 10's. He finished T-11th at the RMAC Championships.
Senior Jacob Allenback (Pueblo, Colo.) will be making his fourth trip to the regional championships, as he traveled with the team in 2013-14 and advanced as an individual the past two seasons. He owns a 76.03 scoring average this season with two top 10's, which includes a T-9th finish at the RMAC Championships.
