PUEBLO, Colo. (November 21, 2016) – Colorado State University-Pueblo Men's Golf Team inked three European players during the National Letter of Intent early signing period. The Pack would like to welcome Sam Barthram, Fraser Hughes, and Nathan McCann to Pueblo.
"This is a first for our program recruiting U.K players thanks to our University giving us an opportunity to bring these student-athletes here," said CSU-Pueblo Director of Golf, Josh Koschke. "So these three players are hopefully going to lay the ground work for more U.K. players to want to come to CSU-Pueblo in the future. "
Fraser Hughes- During his freshman year at New Mexico Junior College, Hughes earned four top 20 finishes including a fifth, ninth, 11th and 13th place finish. Hughes played in all 10 tournaments his freshman year en route to a 75 scoring average. Now a sophomore at NMJC, Hughes completed the fall season earning four top 11 finishes including a second, sixth, seventh and 11th place finish. Hughes' 7th place finish was at the Farmers Insurance Samuel Proal Invitational at CSU-Pueblo. He is currently ranked 44th in the nation in NJCAA Golfstat rankings with a 73.04 scoring average.
"Fraser Hughes is a player who is already here in the states being a part of a top 10 NJCAA program at New Mexico Junior College," Koschke said. "He is coached by one of my former players James Berry and has received high praise from him on and off the golf course. He is definitely someone I am expecting to come in right away and be a big-time contributor. I was really trying to add a high level JuCo player to help replace some of our graduating seniors and we found that here with Fraser."
Nathan McCann- Over the last number of years McCann has tasted success in golf, both singular and in teams. He's been a part of two Fred Daly winning sides (in 2014 and 2016) as well as top qualifiers in Senior Cup qualifying (2014) and Junior Cup (2013). McCann has also been very fortunate to represent his province Ulster as well as top 10 results in tournaments this year, that include Ulster Winter Series- 3rd place (+7), Irish Junior Open- 8th place (+6), Leinster boys- 9th place (+8).
"Nathan McCann is a highly talented young man from Ireland use to playing in adverse conditions," Koschke said. "We were only able to recruit Nathan through e-mails, video and Skype so we believe the research and footage we have seen of him is a great fit for our program. Nathan has a great golf swing and good fundamentals to help him be successful in NCAA college golf. His has a lot of experience in high level tournament golf and feel the transition to college golf will be smooth for Nathan. He has the ability to help our top 5 as soon as he gets here."
Sam Barthram- Barthram is an England U18 South Region Squad member as well as a Surrey U18 Tournament Squad member, winning the 2016 England South East Counties title. Barthram is also a two-time Surrey County Champion (2012 & 2013) and a Surrey Schools U18 Champion (2014). He is planning on majoring in Economics/Finance.
"Sam is a great young man who we were able to meet as he came on a visit to our campus," Koschke said. "He is a big tall strong young man who has a great golf body and the frame to put on some weight and strength in our program. His golf swing is very solid and one of the main reasons I was so interested in him. His fundamentals are solid which allow him to stay strong under pressure in tournament golf. He also has a lot of big tournament experience and has the ability to help us out immediately. Sam has a great family that supports him and his choice to come to CSU-Pueblo."
The Pack men's golf team will return to competition in early 2017.
