PUEBLO, Colo. (November 26, 2017) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's basketball team hosts Johnson & Wales University out of Denver Monday, Nov. 27 at 7 p.m. The contest at Massari Arena will wrap the nonconference schedule for the ThunderWolves.
LAST TIME OUT
The Pack are coming off a 100-88 win at University of Colorado Colorado Springs in an out-of-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contest. The ThunderWovles knocked down 16 treys and shot above 50 percent from both the field (55.6%) and downtown (51.6%). The road team turned the ball over just six times and held UCCS to 42.6 percent from the field.
CSU-Pueblo led most of the way. A layup by senior Will Newman put the Pack up 23-21 to give the ThunderWolves a lead they would never give up. CSU-Pueblo built that lead to as many as 18 in the first half. They led 54-47 at the break.
UCCS would close the gap to three with 8:26 left, making it 81-78. CSU-Pueblo went on a 10-1 run to put the Mountain Lions away.
Sophomore Donovan Oldham led the Pack with 26 points, as he went 8-of-12 from the field, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range. The guard added nine rebounds. Newman added 25 points and rounded out his line with eight rebounds, five assists, a steal and a block. Senior Josh Smith totaled four 3-pointers and poured in 17 points.
ABOUT JOHNSON & WALES
JWU is 0-12 this season (all on the road) with losses to eight RMAC opponents. The Wildcats are averaging 68.8 points per game, while allowing 88.9 points per contest. Johnson & Wales is shooting 42.4 percent from the field, while allowing its opponents to shoot 54.8 percent from the field. JWU lost 91-57 to New Mexico Highlands Friday and 96-66 to No. 23 Fort Lewis College Saturday. Andrew Romero III is leading the team with 23.9 points per game with a team-best 25 3-pointers and 6.8 rebounds per game. Jontrell Herman adds 19.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.
The ThunderWolves rank 2nd in the RMAC and 12th nationally in 3-pointers per game with 12.4 per contest. The 62 daggers from downtown rank 1st in the conference and 10th in Division II. The team's 42.8 percent is the 3rd best in the RMAC and sits 28th nationally.
Senior Josh Smith leads the RMAC in 3-pointers made with 16 and is 3rd in the conference with a 50 percentage from long range.
Redshirt-freshman BJ Hardy sits 24th nationally (1st in RMAC) in 3-point percentage (55%).
With 4.8 blocks per game, the Pack sit 4th in the RMAC and 22nd nationally, while the 24 total blocks is 1st in the league and 20th in Division II. Sophomore Donovan Oldham and senior Mika Nuolivirta each have seven blocks to rank 4th in the conference.
NEWMAN LOADS THE STAT SHEET
• Senior Will Newman sits 3rd in the conference with 27 assists. His 5.4 assists per game ranks 4th in the league.
• Newman has a team-best nine steals to rank 2nd in the RMAC. His 1.8 steals per game is 6th in the conference.
• Newman has totaled 33 free throws to lead the RMAC and sit 16th nationally. His 82.5 percentage from the line is 14th.
