Newman lands on Preseason All-RMAC list; Pack picked sixth

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (October 23, 2017) - Colorado State University-Pueblo men's basketball senior Will Newman (G, Hawthorne, Calif.) was named to the Preseason All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Team, as the league office announced its preseason awards and poll Monday. The ThunderWolves were pegged to finish sixth in the RMAC Preseason Coaches' Poll.

After finishing the RMAC season with a program record 17 victories and posting a 17-5 record good for third in the league, the Pack were picked sixth this season. CSU-Pueblo totaled 136 points in the preseason list, just 20 points out of fourth. Fort Lewis College gathered six first-place votes and 183 points for first, while Colorado School of Mines was second with 178 points and five first-place votes. Regis University was third with 177 points (three first-place), while Westminster College was fourth with 147 points. MSU Denver edged the ThunderWolves with 146 votes and one first-place vote. 

Newman found a spot on the preseason all-conference team, which listed 10 total student-athletes. 

The ThunderWolves finished the 2016-17 season 19-9 overall with the strong conference record that landed it a home RMAC Shootout game for the second time in the last three years.

The Pack return five players that saw time last season, which includes four of the six top scorers. Newman led the team in assists with 116 (4.1 apg) and added 12.4 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. Senior Mark Williams (Chino Hills, Calif.) returns after leading the team in scoring with 13.9 points per game on 56.9 percent shooting from the field. Senior Josh Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and junior Gavin Liggett (Limon, Colo.) combined to total half of the team's 3-pointers. Smith drained 65 3-pointers, while Liggett added 62. Sophomore Donovan Oldham (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was key off the bench and averaged 5.2 points and 1.9 rebounds per game.

The regular season begins with the Conference Challenge at Massari Arena, as the ThunderWolves host three other teams Nov. 10-11. The Pack open with Rogers State Nov. 10 at 7 a.m., while CSU-Pueblo hosts Arkansas Fort-Smith at 7 p.m. Nov. 11.
