Pack's playoff hopes shattered by Mines

ThunderWolves narrowly miss out on upset of third-ranked Orediggers.

PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Feb. 24, 2012) - Facing the conferences best team and needing a win to keep playoff hopes alive, the CSU-Pueblo men's basketball team fell 71-66 against Colorado Mines. The Pack played the Orediggers tight, never allowing a lead to grow bigger than six.

The Pack relied heavily on Ty Trahern (Sr., Kit Carson, Colo.) and Bryse Velasquez (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) who both combined to score 34 points. Trahern did most of his damage from beyond the arc, shooting an efficient 50 percent on 4-for-8 shooting. Trahern finished with 18 points while adding five rebounds.

Velasquez attacked the paint much of the night using his strength to get past defenders. Velasquez finished with 16 points.

Colorado Mines got huge effort from the starters with four players finishing in double digits, led by 18 points from Dale Minschwaner. Chris Goutama added 14 points for the Orediggers.

The Pack had a chance down the stretch to upset the number three ranked team but a deep 3-pointer from Brett Green put the Pack down and gasping for air. A failed posession on the other end all but ended the game for the Pack as the Orediggers were able to hit key free throws to seal the victory.

CSU-Pueblo will close out the 2012 season Saturday when they play host to Colorado Christian. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
