Second-half rally falls short for ThunderWolves
Pack overturns halftime deficit, but can't hold lead down the stretch.
LAS VEGAS, N.M. (GoThunderWolves.com - Jan. 27, 2012) - The CSU-Pueblo men's basketball team nearly turned a 9-point deficit into a victory Friday, but saw its second half rally ultimately fall short as it lost to New Mexico Highlands 89-83.
The ThunderWolves started the second half hot, scoring seven of the half's first nine points to turn a 47-38 deficit to get within 49-45 three minutes into the half. After Highlands stretched the lead again to 58-48, CSU-Pueblo went on a 17-3 run, going up 65-61 and making a new game of it.
The game stayed close until the 1:34 mark, as an 81-81 game was broken open by a three-pointer by Highlands' Ryan Gonzales, paving the way for the Cowboys to pull away for the win.
The ThunderWolves were led by two 20-plus point performances, including 23 points by Andre Martin (Sr., San Diego, Calif.) and a career-high 26 by Bryse Velasquez (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.). Velasquez, the RMAC's assist-leader, also added seven assists in the game.
CSU-Pueblo will travel to Silver City, N.M. Saturday when it will take on Western New Mexico.
