COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 29, 2018) – Despite two home runs, Colorado State University-Pueblo Baseball slipped in their series finale against the University of Colorado Colorado Springs as the Pack wound up on the wrong end of an 8-6 final.
Gilbert Sauceda (Jr., Indio, Calif.) slugged his second home run of the season. Sauceda reached base four times with two hits and two walks in five trips. He drove in two runs and scored once.
With his two walks, Sauceda now has 45 bases on balls this season, the ninth-highest single-season total in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference history. He also moved into fourth in conference history with 108 career walks.
Brandon Maes (R-Fr., Pueblo, Colo.) clubbed his fourth home run of the season. Maes' blast was a two-run shot. The catcher went 2-for-4 with a walk. He is hitting .429 on the season.
Jake Boyd (Sr., Salt Lake City, Utah) swatted three doubles in five plate appearances. Boyd scored two runs. The second baseman hit .643 to the series (9-for-14) with five extra base hits and three RBIs.
Dakota Popham (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) had two hits in five trips. Both of Popham's hits were doubles. The third baseman hit .500 for the series with four doubles and a home run.
UCCS put up three runs in the first inning. These three runs would be the only blemishes on the ledger for Nate Spear (Fr., Seattle, Wash.). In his first career start, Spear surrendered just four hits and two walks in five innings. He struck out seven, but ended up with a no decision.
The Pack quickly seized the lead in the second inning. Maes smacked his two-run shot to bring the Pack back within one. They would tie the game when Boyd scored on a Jorge Duarte (Sr., San Luis, Ariz.) RBI groundout. Sauceda blasted a solo shot to give the Pack a 4-3 lead after two.
In the top of the fourth, the Pack added to their lead. Sauceda cranked a double to the right field gap to bring in Duarte and make it 5-3.
UCCS responded with a five-run sixth that gave them an 8-5 lead. The Pack got a run in the eighth when Boyd scored on an error. They would not get any closer as the Mountain Lions shut the door on the Pack to win the game 8-6 and take the series 3-1.
The ThunderWolves now stand 24-20 overall after losing their final road game. They are 16-15 in RMAC games. UCCS improved to 26-21 (20-15 RMAC).
CSU-Pueblo will return home to face Adams State University in the final home series of the regular season. The Pack will host the Grizzlies in a doubleheader Friday at Runyon Field starting at 12 p.m.
