Pack looks to continue momentum in first road series

PUEBLO, Colo. (February 22, 2018) Colorado State University-Pueblo Baseball will hit the road for the first time in 2018 when they travel to San Angelo, Texas for a challenge in the form of No. 10 Angelo State. The series starts Friday Feb. 23 at 3 p.m. and continues Saturday with a doubleheader at 1 p.m.

Sunday the Pack will wrap up their non-conference schedule with a 12 p.m. showdown with the Rams. All times listed are Mountain Standard Time.

The ThunderWolves enter the weekend riding the momentum of a four-game win streak. CSU-Pueblo swept Northwest Nazarene University in a four-game series at Rawlings Field. The Pack averaged 10.5 runs per game to earn their first sweep in almost two years.

Through nine consecutive games at home to start the season, the Pack achieved a 6-3 record. The Rams have started the year 7-3. They have lost two straight.

Chris Devery (Sr., Saugus, Calif.) led the charge for the Pack in their sweep of the Nighthawks. Devery earned Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors. He also garnered the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Hitter of the Week Award after posting a.674 average and 10 RBIs.

Devery also hit his first home run of the season against the Nighthawks. Thanks to his 10-RBI weekend, Devery places in a tie for second in the RMAC with 12 RBIs this season.

Senior Ambrose Romero (Albuquerque, N.M.) shares second place in the RMAC's RBI chase with Devery. Romero ranks third in the RMAC with a .590 on base percentage. He has drawn a conference-best 10 walks this season.

The Pack's catcher also stands second in the RMAC with five doubles. Romero's 11 runs scored place him in a tie for third in the conference. He ranks second on the Pack with a .407 average.

Mason Krueger (Jr., Draper, Utah) leads the RMAC with 14 runs scored. Krueger is hitting .324 on the season.

Ryan Laydon (Sr., Pueblo, Colo.) and Justin Jaime (Jr., San diego, Calif.) shares the RMAC-lead with two wins, both coming last weekend vs. the Nighthawks. Laydon leads the Pack with a 1.17 ERA, coming out of the bullpen. Jaime has a 2.45 ERA. 

Zach Hoffman (Sr., South Jordan, Utah) has batted .429 through the first three series, to lead the Pack. Hoffman ranks second in the RMAC with two triples. On the mound, Hoffman has 13 strikeouts, eighth-most in the RMAC.

Junior outfielder Billy Reyes (Yucaipa, Calif.) stands second in the RMAC with nine walks. Dakota Popham (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) ranks third in the RMAC with 11 runs scored.

After scoring 42 runs in their series against Northwest Nazarene, the Pack leads the RMAC with 75 runs scored. The Pack is hitting .319 as a team, third-best in the conference.

Head Coach Stan Sanchez is 3-7 all-time against Angelo State. The two teams last met in the 2015 NCAA Tournament South Central Regional. The Pack won the first game 9-8, but lost to the Rams 15-7 to end their season. 

CSU-Pueblo and Angelo State last met in the regular season in 2013. They split a four-game series in Pueblo.

The Pack's series with the Rams begins a three-week road trip of CSU-Pueblo. They will play 12 games away from home before returning to Rawlings Field March 16 to face New Mexico Highlands University at 6 p.m.
