Reyes, Pack make statement in 12-5 win over West Texas

PUEBLO, Colo. (February 3, 2018)   The Colorado State University-Pueblo  Baseball offense came alive with 12 runs on 14 hits to topple West Texas A&M University 12-5 Saturday afternoon at Rawlings Field.

With the win CSU-Pueblo evened its record and the series against the Buffaloes at 1-1. West Texas remains 2-1.

The Buffalo could not get Billy Reyes (Jr., Yucaipa, Calif.) out. Making his first start as a ThunderWolf, Reyes went 2-for-2 with five RBIs. Starting in center field, Reyes drew two walks and hit the Pack's first home run of 2018. 

Mason Krueger (Jr., Draper, Utah) scored four times for the Pack. Krueger went 2-for-3 with two walks. 

Dakota Popham (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) smacked a team-best three hits including a double. Popham scored three times. 

Zach Hoffman (Sr., South Jordan, Utah) finished with 4.2 innings pitched. Hoffman surrendered just three hits, but walked six. He allowed just two earned runs. The senior struck out three.   

Timmy Burtzloff (Jr., Thousand Oaks, Calif.) threw the final 4.1 innings to earn his first win in a Pack uniform. Burtzloff allowed two earned runs and four hits in relief.

The Buffaloes loaded the bases in the first inning after three walks. However, Hoffman worked out of trouble getting a popout to end the inning. Hoffman bounced back with a 1-2-3 second inning, striking out two.

CSU-Pueblo pushed the game's first runs across in the second. Popham led off the inning with a double. Mason Krueger (Jr., Draper, Utah) hit a single to the shortstop who had an errant throw that brought in Popham. Reyes brought in Krueger with a sacrifice fly that made it 2-0 Pack.

The Buffaloes tied it quickly. They scored twice in the top of the third to even it up at two.

In the bottom of the third, the Pack reclaimed the advantage. Jake Boyd (Sr., Salt Lake City, Utah) led off the frame with a base knock. He would score on a Talon Schaller  (Jr., Lakewood, Colo.) single. Schaller's first hit with the Pack put CSU-Pueblo in front 3-2.

An inning later, Reyes smashed the Pack's first homer of the season. Reyes launched a pitch over the right field fence. Krueger scored for the second time to give the Pack a 5-2 lead.

The Buffaloes closed within one. They scored two runs in the top of the sixth to make it 5-4.

CSU-Pueblo wasted no time answering. Popham and Krueger both hit infield singles. Ambrose Romero (Sr., Albuquerque, N.M.) split the gap with a double that plated Popham. Krueger scored on a Mason Telander (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) single. Romero scored on a double play ball to give the Pack an 8-4 advantage after seven. 

The Pack batted around in the eighth. Boyd reached on an error. Gilbert Sauceda (Jr., Indio, Calif.) clubbed an RBI single. Romero drove in a run with a bases loaded walk. Reyes slugged a two-run single to make it 12-4. 

West Texas added a run in the ninth, but the Pack prevailed 12-5. The two teams combined for 18 walks in the game.

The Pack wraps up its first series of the season Sunday when they play Adams State at 3 p.m. at Rawlings Field. Sunday's game will be a non-conference game.
