Double Vision: Pack bested by Cougars twice by 5-4 final

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (April 14, 2017) - In both games of their Friday doubleheader with Colorado Christian University, Colorado State University-Pueblo Baseball ended up on the short end of a 5-4 final.  

The Pack has dropped each of their first three games of this series to the Cougars by one run. Both teams now stand 16-21 overall with a 10-13 mark in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games The ThunderWolves and Cougars now share fifth place in the RMAC standings. 

In game one, the Pack got on the board first. David Gunther (Sr., Albuquerque, N.M.) scored on an error to make it 1-0. Gunther went 2-for-4 in game one. 

The Cougars answered with a run of their own in the first. They would score four more in the third to chase Pack starter Jason Lighthall (Jr., Littleton, Colo.) and take a 5-1 lead. 

Down four runs, the Pack turned to Zach Visinoni (Sr., Paradise, Calif.) who came out of the bullpen and put his stamp on the game. Visinoni threw 3.1 shutout innings, allowing just one hit. He struck out three Cougars to lower his ERA to a team-best 1.80. 

In the sixth inning, the Pack added a pair runs as Chris Devery (Jr., Saugus, Calif.) and Jake Boyd (Jr., Salt Lake City, Utah) scored on a fielder's choice and an error to cut the lead to 5-3.  

CSU-Pueblo added one more in the top of the seventh and final inning as Sonny Arellano (R-Fr., Pueblo, Colo.) drove in Gilbert Sauceda (So., Indio, Calif.) to make it 5-4. However, the Pack would not be able to complete the comeback as Jarrod Rivera picked up the save for the Cougars.

Zach Hoffman (Jr., South Jordan, Utah) went 3-for-4 for the Pack in game two. Hoffman scored a run and picked up an RBI. He also stole two bases. The Pack's center fielder leads the Pack with 13 swiped bags this season. 

Game two began similarly to game one as the Pack scored twice in the first inning. Devery singled to bring in Hoffman. Lighthall scored on a Brandon Castaneda (Sr., Azusa, Calif.) base knock. 

Once again, the Cougars would tie things up in the bottom of the first. They would claim the lead with a run in the third to make it 3-2.   

The Pack would tie it in their half of the fourth. Jorge Duarte (Jr., San Luis, Ariz.) knocked in Mason Telander (Jr., Littleton, Colo.) with a single to tie the game at three. Duarte went 2-for-3 in the game. 

After the Cougars reclaimed the lead in the fourth, the Pack would tie it again in the sixth. Hoffman plated Boyd  with a bunt single to knot the game up at four. 

In the bottom of the seventh and final inning. The Cougars would load the bases. They would would walk off on a bases loaded single that gave Colorado Christian a 5-4 win. 

Kyle Peeler (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) took the loss in game two, allowing five runs in runs innings. Lighthall received the loss in game one. He also allowed five runs.  

The Pack will look to avoid the sweep Saturday when they face the Cougars in the series finale starting at 1 p.m. After their series with the Cougars, the Pack will return for an eight-game homestand that will include the annual Pack the Park game April 28 at 7:05 at Runyon Field.
