PUEBLO, Colo. (December 20, 2017) - Colorado State University-Pueblo's Taylor Long (Sr., Moreno Valley, Calif.) and Will Newman (Sr., Hawthorne, Calif.) have been named Pack Student-Athletes of the Week, presented by Mobile Record Shredders.
Long led CSU-Pueblo to road wins over Colorado Mesa University and Western State Colorado University. The senior averaged 15.5 points per game while shooting 55.6 percent from the field. She sank 62.5 percent from downtown. The guard knocked down 6-of-6 at the free throw line.
Facing a then 9-1 Mavericks team in hostile territory, Long drained three 3-pointers in just 23 minutes on her way to a 15 point night. With the Pack trailing for the first time all game, 46-45 in the waning seconds of the third quarter, Long hit a 25 foot buzzer beater that brought the lead and momentum back to the Pack. They would never trail again on their way to a 67-60 win.
Long hit 6-of-8 from the field and had two rebounds in the win. Defensively, Long delivered a steal.
Competing against her former team Saturday night, Long delivered 16 points and two more 3-pointers to guide the Pack to a 69-57 win over the Mountaineers. Long swished a perfect 6-for-6 from the line. She also handed out four assists and grabbed five rebounds.
For Long, this is her second career RMAC Offensive Player of the Week honor. She last earned this award Feb. 20, 2017.
On the men's side, Newman guided the Pack with 24 points on 8-of-16 shooting Friday at Colorado Mesa. Newman knocked down 4-of-6 from deep and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. The Pack's point guard narrowly missed a double-double with nine assists. He added five rebounds.
Saturday at Western the 6-foot-1 guard became the 22nd member of the Colorado State University-Pueblo men's basketball team to surpass 1,000 career points, as the senior helped guide the ThunderWolves to a 92-79 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference road win against the Mountaineers.
Newman scored all his 14 points in the second half and knocked down a team-high three 3-pointers. He dished out 10 assists to tie a career high and reach double digit dimes for the second time in his career. He also pulled down eight rebounds for his fourth eight-plus reobund game of the season.
