COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 28, 2017) - The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doled out its fifth annual Brechler Awards Wednesday, which recognizes the top GPA in all 23 sports the conference sponsors. Four Colorado State University-Pueblo teams earned the honor, which tied for the most in the conference this season.
The four Brechler Awards not only tied for tops in the league this year, but matched the school's total awards in the four previous years of the accolade. Colorado Mesa University and Westminster College also gathered four awards.
Earning the honor were the men's tennis team, both the men's and women's outdoor track and field squads and the men's indoor track and field team. The honor is the second for the men's tennis team (2012-13), while the men's cross country team was recognized last year.
The men's tennis team recorded a 3.357 GPA and was guided in the classroom by CoSIDA Academic All-District selection David Mould (Jr., Upminister Essex, United Kingdom).
The Pack men's and women's cross country and track and field programs combined for five academic all-district selections and three CoSIDA Academic All-America honorees in Dante Carter (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.), Sydni Riley (Sr., Florissant, Colo.) and Derrick Williams (Jr., Columbia Falls, Mont.). The men's indoor and outdoor teams recorded a 3.265 GPA, while the women's outdoor squad posted a 3.514 GPA.
The award is named after Paul W. Brechler, a former RMAC Commissioner (1976-1990), who along with wife Wanda, were the first inductees into the RMAC Hall of Fame. Brechler is also the former athletic director of the University of Iowa and served as Commissioner of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC).
Grades were used from the 2016-17 academic year. All student-athletes that were on the institution's NCAA eligibility list were included in the teams GPA calculation. The team GPA was calculated by dividing the total quality points for each semester by the total number of credits for each semester. Team GPAs were submitted to the RMAC Office by each institution's Compliance Administrator.
Plaques for each team will be presented at the 2017 RMAC Hall of Fame and Awards Banquet Friday, July 14 at the Colorado Springs Marriott Hotel. For more information, click here.
